Acorn Construction recently completed a brand-new, easy-access storage facility in the centre of Fownhope. This initiative, launched by Thomas Forge as a rural diversification project in December 2024, provides a practical and secure storage solution for the local community.
Project Background
The site, formerly a sawmill yard operated by Thomas Forge and located on Ferry Lane, has undergone a transformation to serve the village better. The goal was to convert the underutilised space into a sustainable and convenient storage facility, reducing the need for residents to travel to more remote storage locations.
What We Did To bring this project to life, Acorn Construction undertook several key tasks:
- Complete rip-out of the existing yard area.
- Breaking of the concrete and reducing the ground levels.
- Building a concrete retaining wall, including one for the neighbour’s garden.
- Installing a new concreted front apron.
- Placement of 10 containers, each wired with lights and sockets.
- Cladding the front to match the existing workshop.
Challenges
This project presented several challenges that required careful planning and execution. The site had tight access, which made manoeuvring equipment and materials difficult. Working on a one-track lane also necessitated effective traffic management to ensure smooth operations. The delivery of containers posed another challenge, as they arrived on articulated lorries, requiring strict safety measures to be in place. Furthermore, meeting deadlines was essential as the project was working to a grant. “With such a narrow access route and large deliveries, safety and logistical coordination were vital, but our team managed these difficulties effectively,” said Sam from Acorn Construction.
Facility Features
The storage facility consists of 10 secure shipping containers monitored 24/7 by CCTV for security. Each unit is illuminated for ease of use, and private access outside the facility makes loading and unloading convenient. Additionally, the project supports sustainability by reducing residents’ need to travel to distant storage locations.
