A Flawless Fusion of Craftsmanship and Character
Choosing Acorn Construction
When the owners of Elm Barn began to consider much-needed improvements to their 19th-century farm courtyard home, they turned to a trusted source for guidance—a family friend’s recommendation. That led them to Acorn Construction, a decision they would come to value as the project unfolded.
The Vision and Goals
The aim was not simply to repair a deteriorating 30-year-old patio, but to create a high-quality, larger, and more functional space. The new design needed to respect and complement the original character of the property while enhancing its usability for modern living.

Collaborative Planning Without an Architect
Unusually, the project moved forward without a formal architect. Instead, ideas, sketches, and estimates were shared directly between the client and the Acorn team. This open, collaborative approach proved efficient and flexible, with a lead time of just one month from agreement to getting started on-site.
Scope of the Work
- The transformation was comprehensive. It included:
- Excavation of the old patio and garden wall
- Revised drainage and downpipe diversion
- Installation of new drainage and service ducts (electric/water)
- Laying of a new sunroom base (sub-base, insulation, underfloor heating pipes, and screed)
- Construction of a double-cavity, insulated brick wall with two recessed archways
- All necessary foundations and damp proofing
- Special attention was paid to the brickwork and detailing to ensure the additions blended seamlessly with the existing period features.
Craftsmanship That Stands Out
The homeowner praised the quality of the workmanship throughout. The curved engineering brickwork and tiled wall capping, in particular, were highlighted as beautifully crafted, enhancing the barn’s courtyard setting.
While the project was almost flawless, a small learning point was noted: a more flexible grout may have helped prevent hairline cracks in the heated flagstone floor.
A Space That Transforms Daily Living
The new space has already brought great benefits to home life. The sunroom now provides a stunning indoor/outdoor connection, with future plans for garden steps and an outdoor kitchen unit already in the works. Discreet and attractive outdoor lighting makes the area just as enjoyable after sunset, extending its use into the evening.
Experience Working with Acorn
From the very first day on site, the Acorn team made a strong impression. The homeowner described them as a young and energetic group—hardworking, professional, and clearly passionate about their craft. Their approach was consistently accommodating and thoughtful, with a strong focus on clear communication and maintaining a tidy and well-managed site throughout the project.
What really stood out, though, was their infectious “can-do” attitude. Nothing was too much trouble, and they brought a real sense of enthusiasm to each stage of the build. The client also appreciated their creativity, offering clever suggestions and thoughtful touches that helped elevate the project beyond the original vision. It was a genuinely collaborative process, and one that left the homeowners feeling in safe, capable hands from start to finish.
