A Tale of Two Homes: How Acorn Construction Transformed Life for One Droitwich Family

When Paul and Jackie decided it was time to renovate their two semi-detached properties in Droitwich, it wasn’t about chasing aesthetics or adding value for resale. It was about family.
Their daughter was expecting a baby, and space was becoming tight. Meanwhile, Paul, who lives with the long-term effects of a farming injury, needed a home that would support more accessible living.

The solution

A bold, full-scale renovation that would see both homes reroofed, extended, and completely reimagined — all in time for Christmas.

Finding the Right Team

Paul and Jackie didn’t bring in an architect or consult with a firm. Instead, they went with a trusted recommendation: Acorn Construction. From their first conversation with Sam, who led the project, they felt confident.

“We didn’t need fancy plans — we needed someone who listened, understood, and knew how to get the job done,” says Jackie. “That was Sam.”

The Vision

The plan was ambitious. For their daughter’s home — where family life was growing fast — the project included:

  • A double-storey rear extension, plus an additional single-storey section
  • A full back-to-brick refurbishment of every room
  • Complete rewiring and replumbing
  • Two new bathrooms and a modern kitchen
  • A child-friendly garden patio, play area, and new front garden

Next door, Paul and Jackie’s home was designed with ease and comfort in mind. A single-storey extension added a ground-floor bathroom, utility room, and a new kitchen, all built to support Paul’s mobility needs.
Both properties were also fully reroofed.

The Christmas Promise

With everything on track, the family set one key deadline: to be enjoying Christmas dinner in the new kitchen.

Then, eight weeks before Christmas, a major change of plan — Paul and Jackie decided to remove the chimney breasts. “We knew it was a big request so late in the build,” says Paul, “but Sam and the team just took it in their stride.”

What could have delayed the project became a rallying point. The Acorn team worked tirelessly to keep things on schedule. “They’re a lovely bunch of fellas,” Jackie recalls. “They worked so hard to make sure everything was ready. And yes — we had Christmas dinner exactly where we dreamed we would.”

The Result

The full build took around 15 months (with the smaller extension finished in about 6 months). And the results? Transformational.
“It all looks lovely,” says Jackie. “The kids have their own rooms, there’s space to spend time together, and our side of the house is now so much easier for Paul to manage.”

Their daughter echoed the sentiment:
“It’s improved our lives massively.”

Reflections and Advice

Would they do anything differently? “Not a thing,” Jackie says. “Sam even suggested a few changes we hadn’t thought of, and we’re so glad we listened.”

When asked for advice for others considering a similar project, Jackie is realistic but encouraging:

“Be involved. It will be stressful — all building work is — but if you trust the people doing it, the result is worth every bit of it.”

Final Thoughts

From a complex build to a meaningful outcome, Paul and Jackie’s story is a perfect example of how thoughtful construction can truly change lives.

“Well worth it — Sam suggested doing things differently, and we’re glad we went with it.”
